BAFF (also called BLys) and APRIL play key roles in B lymphocyte differentiation, survival and activation.
Three membrane receptors are concerned :
Ligands Receptor affinity
BAFF-R TACI BCMA
Lymphocyte apoptosis is decreased because
stimulation of BAFF-R and BCMA increases
levels of Bcl-2. Stimulation of all 3 receptors increases intranuclear levels of NFk B, active on differentiation and proliferation of many cell lines.
Abbreviations : APRIL a proliferation inducing ligand; BAFF B cell activation factor of the TNF family (also known as BLyS); BAFF-R receptor for BAFF; Bcl B cell lymphoma gene 2; BCMA B cell maturation antigen; BLyS B lymphocyte stimulator;
BR3 BAFF receptor 3 (also known as BAFF-R); NFk B nuclear factor kappa B; TACI transmembrane activator and calcium modulator and cyclophylin ligand interactor
