Gene from a hypothetical
human/avian reassortment
Human flu gene
Avian flu gene
ATCHOUM !!!
For frequent interhuman transmission to occur, a new virus would have to appear. It would be a chimera between  the avian virus, and a virus used to infect humans .
The gene reassortment could take place in an intermediary host (for instance swine), if this host were simultaneously infected with both viruses.
New virus, chimera of avian and human flu, that could, if it appeared, be responsible for frequent interhuman transmission

Flu viruses often "reassort" : this is how a not particularly dangerous subtype appeared in 2002 : H1N2, by genetic reassortment between H1N1 & H3N2. The intermediary host was man.
